The Influential Nonprofit: Episode 126: Dr. Victoria Boyd: Websites That Work!

President and Founder of The Philantrepreneur™ Foundation, Dr. Boyd has been a driving force in education, non-profit, and entrepreneurial endeavors as an educator, trainer, administrator, and advocate throughout the country. With a passion for seeing others reach their full potential, she provides guidance and training focusing on nonprofit and social enterprise development and management.

The nonprofit side and business side must intersect. If you are a business, you need to have a purpose, you need to give back to the community and if you are on the nonprofit side, you need to consider how you can sustainably realize your mission by thinking like an entrepreneur. 

Nonprofits have to upgrade how they talk about themselves and how they label their work because the words we use influence our mindset and feelings. Instead of nonprofit, Dr. Victoria suggests we call them a “For-Purpose Business” - which is more accurate since running a nonprofit requires both passion and resources. 

You don’t own anything on social media. If that social media shuts down, you will lose all your followers and all your content. This is why you always have to set it up so that your followers will be sent to your website. 

Give yourself a year to get to know a person before asking them to be on the board. Build a relationship so that you can know if it is their passion. Where you put your support and where you put your service are two different things, you have to figure out where they stand. 

  • You are a for-purpose business. You need to invest in your organization - invest in different things that need to be done in order for you to really have an impact with your mission.

  • Your website is one of your most important assets. It's one of the first things that you should really devote time and energy to putting together you have the vision of what you want to do.

  • You don't own anything that's on social media. The goal is, to let them hear about you. That's brand awareness, all those social media platforms. But always do a call to action, that sends them to something that's on your website.
