The Influential Nonprofit Episode 98: Maryanne Dersch: Using Listener Mindsets To Have More Productive Conversations

Focus on one thing: make people feel seen and heard. Your job isn’t to pitch, sell, or convince, your job is to make people feel seen and heard.

Listen to the person and toss aside your agenda when you see that they are in struggle.

Honor their struggle and witness it, remember that you don’t have to get involved in order to do that.

When people are in slow mode, that means that they do want to make a decision eventually, once they’ve gotten all the information they need or when they’re done consulting someone that they want to. Schedule a time for you to discuss the matter again in the near future and if they don’t come, then it’s a no.

“Go” is a sense of urgency. When you meet a person who’s in urgency, you’ve got to honor that by matching their urgency and never forgetting their call.

  • Your job is to not pitch, sell or convince. Your job is to help people feel seen and heard. That's it. And if you do that, they will relax and they will be open to what you have to say.

  • You can honor their struggle without getting involved. We don't have to fix it, solve it. All we have to do is witness it, honor it.

  • Glow mode is when you just connect with somebody and it's easy and it's effortless. They love you and you love them and they're ready to buy and you're ready to sell and everything is aligned.

Ask for and receive all you want need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy.
