Thriving In The Attention Economy

When I was writing my book, I asked my book writing coach how much of my expertise I should share with my readers. Should I share some of what I know? All of it? If I shared all of it, then what would people hire me for?

"Tell them everything," she said. Here's why.

Information is free and readily available. We have, at our fingertips, all the information we could ever imagine. Information is no longer at a premium.

What is at a premium? Attention.

Clients hire me because of the attention, support, and guidance. I am happy to share all I know because it is still not me.

Same goes for your marketing efforts. You might tend to share information but what you are really wanting from others is their attention.

That means shifting thinking from information sharing to more authentic, transparent and honest communication. It means taking a stand, even if you know it might make others uncomfortable. Embracing your boldness!

You are out to get attention, not share information. WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME.

Thankfully, I brought Eric Ressler on The Influential Nonprofit to explain all about how to thrive in the new attention economy.

He is the Founder and Creative Director at Cosmic, a Social Impact Creative Agency. Cosmic empowers social impact organizations to catalyze real-world change by helping them nail their impact story, build brand awareness, and inspire action.

“You have a brand, whether or not you think you do, and the more that you can dial in that brand - your visual identity, your impact story, your niche - that foundational kind of brand-building work is either going to supercharge everything else that you do or hold back everything else that you do. ”
