Courageous Communication: looking after the inner and outer climate

  Courageous Communication

Welcome!

Our current focus is on a Global Cooling project, using clouds
over tropical countries to reflect the sun's heat. This will be
done through rainwater harvesting in parts of Africa with
sufficient turbulence for cloud formation. We are also working
on expanding a project helping people find enjoyable ways to
reduce the climate impact of personal and business flights
(more info below).

Courageous Communication is a way to unblock stuck situations,
personal, work-related and global. It draws on Marshall
Rosenberg's NVC (Nonviolent Communication) , Joanna Macy's
"Coming Back to Life" and plain old good sense.

For information on these projects and how to apply NVC in climate
change work

Climate Change project:

Helping People Enjoy Flying Less Often

If campaigners or governments tell people they should fly less, they

are likely to get resentment at best and hostility at worst. Instead,

we propose a project to support people to choose to fly less, using

a communication cascade and a tried and tested communications

process (NVC).

Why fly less?

Emissions from jet aircraft are growing while most other sources of
greenhouse gases in countries like the UK are stable or falling.

Whatever happens on domestic fuel or electrical generation, it is
going to be crucial that everyone who can afford to fly chooses to
fly less over the next 5-10 years. We can not wait for international
agreements and legislation to be in place before we start acting on
this. To prevent runaway climate change, we will need to be
travelling less, or travelling mostly by sea and rail, between 2015
and 2025. This is perfectly possible if lots of people start doing it.
Already you can go from Southampton to New York on the
Queen Mary for £400-£800 and from London to Inverness on the
sleeper train for £19.

What will the project do?

  1. create a replicable communications package and an
international network of coaches who support people
to reduce how much they fly year on year for the next
    2-18 years

  2. demonstrate actual reductions in how much people are
    choosing to fly

  3. offer the package to NGOs, educational organisations,
    businesses etc.

  4. scale up

A side benefit may be that people strart telling their politicians
they want more support for sea/rail and a cut in subsidies to the
air industry.

How can people get involved?

Background information:

For more information about

Nonviolent Communication in the UK                                         go to     www.NVC-UK.info

Despair/empowermnent work and Deep Ecology in the UK        go to     Chris Johnstone's site.

Despair/empowerment work is a way for people who feeling worried or hopeless about the state of the world to work with those feelings in groups and uncover buried energy and strength. The work was developed by many people including Joanna Macy, who is a key figure in Deep Ecology. Her web site is www.joannamacy.net .

Nonviolent Communication begins with communication about values and what’s going on in the present, leaving the specifics of the outcome to human creativity. To a surprising degree it facilitates understanding and cooperation between people. For more information on NVC and testimonials from William Ury, Deepak Chopra, Riane Eisler and John Gray (author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) visit www.cnvc.org
